I am quite happy with my final collage.
It came to my attention from peer critiques that my first draft collage had an extremely ugly background that I decided that I also strongly disliked, so I searched for a beautiful image to use as my background instead. I took a picture of a rainbow on campus a few weeks ago, and it worked perfectly here. I cropped the image to only show the rainbow in the sky, I rotated it 90-degrees counter-clockwise, and used the spot healing brush tool to remove the top of a building and some trees from the frame. I used “Command-T” to transform the image to the way that suited the collage. I also adjusted the tone and contrast of the image.
I decided to remove the repeating “College” text because it was ugly and too on-the-nose. I realized that collages shouldn’t need text to tell the viewer what it is about. That kinda defeats the purpose of telling a story through pictures.
I experimented with the positioning of the rainbow for a while until I landed on what is seen in the final draft. It took a long time to decide which way that I would have it facing and the positioning was tricky, but I think that the final product is the best result out of my experimentations. Initially, I had the rainbow barely peaking out behind the pictures, but that defeated the purpose of having a rainbow in the first place. The final positioning displays the rainbow in full viewThe rainbow flows with the images and adds some more aid for the eye to follow the narrative. It also contrasts the mundanity of the narrative.
The main three pictures did not need to be altered in any way in the final draft because I was really happy with how they were positioned in the first draft.
My collage contains pictures that tell a cohesive and simple narrative with a beautiful background, and the revision process was very beneficial.
